Denise Bledsoe Slaughter,
director of communications since 1999, works with program managers
and project directors to implement IEL's communications strategy.
She is responsible for the development of external messages and helps
develop all publications, reports and related material. She began
her tenure at IEL as a senior program associate with the Superintendents
Prepared Program, a yearlong leadership development program for persons
aspiring to the urban school superintendency.
Formerly, Ms. Slaughter
was the administrator of the National Press Foundation in Washington,
D.C., where she served as the financial and administrative manager,
principal liaison to the president and board of directors, donors'
manager, annual dinner and special events coordinator, minority
programs administrator, and personnel officer. She also was assistant
secretary and assistant treasurer of the Foundation's board of directors.
Previously, she served as assistant director of training at International
City Management Association.
Ms. Slaughter's professional
memberships include the National Press Club, the National Association
of Black Journalists, and the Education Writers Association.
She holds a B.A. in English
and American Literature and an M.A. in Creative Writing from Brown
University. She was elected to a two-year term as Secretary of the
Black Alumni Association of Brown in 2001. At the invitation of
Dr. Ruth Simmons, President, Brown University, Ms. Slaughter serves
on the "Education Excellence and Diversity Committee."
