  • "SCHOOL BOARDS: PART OF THE PROBLEM OR PART OF THE SOLUTION?"   [link to pdf]     [link to html]
Read the very powerful observations and recommendations of Eli Broad expressed to attendees at this year's National School Boards Association's Annual Conference. Mr. Broad, Chairman of AGI SunAmerica Inc., gave the third annual Jacqueline P. Danzberger Memorial Lecture, which was established in 2001 by colleagues, friends, and family to commemorate the many contributions of Jackie in the area of America's school governance. Mr. Broad's lecture will be available in print in late May. Meanwhile, we encourage you to read his rather frank address and challenge to America's school boards.

If you would like to be sure to receive a hard copy of his speech upon availability (or to learn more about the Danzberger Lecture series), please send an e-mail to Denise Slaughter at slaughterd@iel.org.

  • Read the current issue of IELeadership Connections, IEL's bi-monthly newsletter: Vol. 1, No. 4 March/April 2003, released on March 7, 2003. It includes a commentary on "Solutions" and hyperlinks to a variety of new publications or contacts for more information. If you're not already subscribed and would like to be for future issues, send an e-mail with "Subscribe" in the subject line to medranog@iel.org.

  • How is School Reform Tied to Increasing College Access and Success for Low-Income and Minority Youth,a recent report written for the Pathways to College Network, examines the relationship between high school reform efforts and college access for low-income and minority youth. Among its findings is that while few reform models and efforts directly address college access, many are comprised of one or more promising practices-e.g., having access to a rigorous academic curriculum, personalized learning environments, and alignment of curriculum between grade levels. Contact co-authors Monica Martinez and Shayna Klopott, who are both affiliated with the Institute of Educational Leadership and the National Clearinghouse on Comprehensive School Reform, for more information on the report.

  • NOW Available FOR FREE in Hard Copy from IEL: Read the report, Helping Young People Succeed: Strengthening and Sustaining Relationships Between Schools and Youth Development Organizations. It is the result of a first-ever meeting of leaders of national education and youth development (sponsored by IEL, the National Collaboration for Youth, and the Coalition for Community Schools). It identifies why and how individuals and institutions can cross the unnecessary boundary between youth development and education. "Can't we all just get along? We have to see community-based youth groups and school-based groups as not standing on two sides of the Grand Canyon…Each of us has solutions that other groups need, if we can just find a way to reach out and join hands." Paul Houston, Executive Director of the American Association of School Administrators spoke these words at the this joint meeting. To order: pubs/order.html
